Find a high quality student <a href=\"https:\/\/groovewiz.com\/what-are-the-best-flutes-for-jazz\/\">flute<\/a> with a head joint that responds easily and has a good sound. Look for a closed hole instrument with an offset G and a C foot, durable for a variety of uses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s dig a little about what to look for in a flute for a doubler, and It\u2019s a great way to get more playing jobs because you\u2019ll be in higher demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woodwind instruments have some characteristics that make picking up the flute and playing it feel natural under the fingers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the <strong>fingering systems <\/strong>aren\u2019t exactly alike for all woodwinds, but they are similar enough that a good bit of your knowledge of fingerings can transfer to the flute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also considered fairly standard that a woodwind player for musicals and in the jazz band can double and even triple on instruments. Learning the flute adds an important facet to your playing abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to <strong>begin doubling as early on in your career as you can<\/strong>. It takes time and practice to develop a good flute tone. In addition to being more economical, a student flute is probably <strong>safer to take on rock or jazz gigs<\/strong> than a very expensive flute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Closed_hole_vs_open_hole\"><\/span>Closed hole vs. open hole<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Doublers often choose to play a <strong>closed hole flute &#8211; plateau keys<\/strong>. These are generally less expensive models, and they\u2019re easier to play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a saxophonist switches to flute, for example, they don\u2019t have to worry about getting their fingers in exactly the right place to close the holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an open hole flute, however, you can always <strong>plug the holes<\/strong> if you find that works better for you. Some players feel closed holes compromise the overall tone, although that\u2019s debatable.  Some feel open hole flutes sound better, others don\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, if you\u2019re playing in a <strong>pit or a jazz band<\/strong>, the tone of a closed hole flute works very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"C_foot_vs_B_foot\"><\/span>C foot vs. B foot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By the same token, a <strong>C foot<\/strong> flute will most likely work better for a doubler than a B foot. It\u2019s <strong>lighter<\/strong>, making it easier on the hands and arms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also <strong>responds more easily<\/strong>, especially in the third octave. In addition, you most likely won\u2019t be asked to play a low B very often. Buying a flute with a C foot is also a <strong>less expensive<\/strong> choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inline_G_vs_offset_G\"><\/span>Inline G vs. offset G<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a doubler, it\u2019s a good idea to get a flute with an offset G. <strong>It matches the design of the keys on a saxophone better<\/strong>, with the third finger of the left hand set a little further over than the other keys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An offset G is simply <strong>more comfortable to play<\/strong>, because it follows the natural shape of the fingers and the hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Split_E_mechanism\"><\/span>Split E mechanism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, try to get a flute with a split E mechanism, which <strong>makes the high E respond much more easily<\/strong>. For many flute doublers, this note can be difficult to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Head_joint\"><\/span>Head joint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When play-testing a flute you\u2019re interested in, make sure the head joint is one that responds easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try playing your other instrument(s) then quickly switching to the flute quickly. How easily does it respond? Does it produce a sound with good tonal depth throughout the range of the instrument?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to get a <strong>silver head joint <\/strong>to go with a student level flute as it will improve your tone drastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Budget_for_a_doubler_flute\"><\/span>Budget for a doubler flute<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the cost of a flute is determined by how much silver it contains. Featuring a <strong>silver body and keys<\/strong>, this flute is <strong>closed hole<\/strong> with an <strong>offset G <\/strong>and a <strong>C foot<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commercial is known for having <strong>good projection throughout the range<\/strong> of the instrument, and has a compact tone. It is considered a <strong>student flute<\/strong>, but is <strong>very well made and durable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yamaha 222 has a <strong>nickel silver head joint, body and foot joint<\/strong>, with a silver-plated finish. It is <strong>closed hole<\/strong>, and it comes with a <strong>C foot joint<\/strong> and an <strong>offset G<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This flute includes Yamaha\u2019s CY headjoint. The design of this head joint features a double flare taper and an undercut design to the embouchure hole.
